blockI respect people’s decisions not to vote or vote third party but when people say…same, I.., in this day and age, I can’t respect the nameWith all due respect to you, I can’t respect people who choose NOT to vote. I may muster up a bit of respect for those who vote 3rd party, however, the way things are now, with so many things hanging in the balance, to choose not to vote under some moral high ground or pretentiousness and posturing is despicable. If you can comfortably sit home on some “the system is bullshit” and watch as human and civil rights are used as bargaining chips, I have absolutely no respect for you or the causes you claim to support.
Silence and inaction are complicity.
I don’t agree with not voting. I don’t think it helps end the corruptness of the system whatsoever. However, I think people can have all sorts of reasons why they don’t vote. I think that a person can be very invested in dismantling inequity without being invested in formal political structures. To a certain degree, I believe oppressive power is capable of responding and adapting to all kinds of shifts in formal political structure and therefore I don’t believe that formal politics is the only sphere in which one can do battle against injustice. To me it is a matter of having faith that changing and shaping formal political structure will change or challenge how power works. I think there is abundant evidence on both sides of that (having faith that it will and not having faith that it will.) Personally, I do believe that the one thing—participation in the formal political process—by justice-minded individuals can actually impact the other—how power operates. But, to me, it makes sense that people might not believe that an actual causal relationship exist between those two things. And if they truly don’t believe that such a relationship exist—not just that it doesn’t work exactly how they like—then it make sense that they don’t want to participate in what they see as a smoke screen/fantasy/non-reality.
